LADY IN LED
2015
This was a project for the Making Sense of Wearables class at ITP. Our assignment was to make a tunic with some electronic component that only turns on while the garment is being worn. I wanted to make something I could see myself wearing so I kept the design simple and elegant. I made a black tank top dress with an LED strip collar. The LED strip is wrapped in clear vinyl so that there is slight space in between the fabric and the lights, making it look like a floating necklace. I chose a heavy black jersey material so that it would be easy and comfortable to wear but also strong enough to hold the electronic components without pulling down on the fabric. The LED strip only turns on when the dress is closed in the back with the button clasp, which closes the circuit. There is a small battery pack in a sewn in pocket providing power to the dress. The batteries can be easily changed when needed.
